The following academic concepts will be covered. THIS IS ONLY A GUIDE AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

 

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW--ELA

Unit 1-  All About Me and ABC’s- 9 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will learn that investigating is foundational to learning. Students will review alphabet and concepts of print through books about the library, friendship, and the ABC’s.

Unit 2- The Amazing Animal World- 9 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will focus on constructing stronger informative writing passages.

Unit  3- Life  Lessons and Contributions- 9 weeks

Unit Overview: Building on the work with fiction and informational text in previous units, students will meet famous Americans in informational books and then hear fictional stories about the same people.

Unit  4- Winds of Change and a Glass Slipper- 9 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will build on the simple characteristics of fable characters. Students will study cause and effect, writing, and making revisions.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW-Math

Unit 1- Creating Routines Using Data- 6 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will establish daily routines to be carried out throughout the year, such as daily questions, calendar activities, working with a number chart, etc. Students will work with categorical data by organizing, representing and interpreting data using charts and tables.

Unit 2 – Developing Base Ten Number Sense- 6 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will read, write and represent a number of objects with a written numeral form.

Unit 3 – Understanding Shapes and Fractions- 6 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will identify, study, compose, compare, contrast and classify basic two and three-dimensional shapes and figures. Students will relate, identify, partition and label fractions (halves and fourths) as equal parts of whole objects.

Unit 4- Sorting, Comparing, and Ordering- 6 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will develop an understanding of linear measurement. Students will tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.

Unit 5-Operations and Algebraic Thinking- 6 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will work with sums and differences less than or equal to 20, analyze number patterns, and understand that addition and subtraction are related.

Unit 6- Understanding Place Value- 6 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will express numbers in terms of tens and ones, mentally add ten more and ten less, compare two numbers by using symbols and number words. Students will use place value understanding and properties to add and subtract.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW—Social Studies

Unit 1 - Connecting Themes in First Grade Social Studies- 3 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will be introduces to the five themes that will feature prominently in the first grade: culture; individuals, groups and institutions; location;  scarcity; and time , change and continuity.

 

Unit 2 – Our National Heritage- 6 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will identify their city, state, country, nation, and continent. Students will learn about folktale heroes and understand the meaning of songs about America. Students will identify their city, country, state, nation, and continent.

Unit 3 – Our Changing Country- 6 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will understand the contributions made by historical figures: Thomas Jefferson, Lewis & Clark with Sacagawea, and Harriet Tubman. Students will learn that choices are made based on scarcity.

Unit 4 – Inventors in the United States- 6 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will understand the contributions made by historical figures: Benjamin Franklin and George Washington Carver. Students will identify goods and services and describe how people are producers and consumers.

Unit 5-  Community Helpers -  6 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will understand the contributions made by historical figures: Theodore Roosevelt. Students will identify cost and benefits of saving and spending.

Unit 6- We are Alike, We are Different- 6 weeks

Unit Overview: Students will identify positive character traits of  historical figures and compare everyday lives of historical figures to the present.

GRADING SYSTEM: The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment of student learning shall be conducted by the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in the context of ongoing classroom instruction. A variety of approaches, methodologies, and resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity to succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s academic achievement, and communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a timely manner through the electronic grading portal. Notes: 

*English Learners (ELs) must not receive numerical or letter grades for the core content areas in elementary and middle school during their first year of language development. A grade of CS or CU must be assigned. This rule may be extended beyond the first year with approval from the EL Studies Program. English Learners must receive a grade for ESOL courses.

 

~Elementary schools will utilize P (pass) and F (fail) in Health/Physical Education, Music, World Languages, Visual Arts and Performing Arts.

 

 

 

DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS

STUDENT PROGRESS

Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and thirteen and a half weeks into each semester.  The progress of students shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate deficiencies as they are discovered. Plans shall include appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of the students. See Board Policy IH.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing false information, falsifying school records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID or password. See the Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development Handbook.

HOMEWORK

Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an application or adaptation of a classroom experience.  Homework is at all times an extension of the teaching/learning experience.  It should be considered the possession of the student and should be collected, evaluated and returned to the students. See Board Policy IHB.

MAKE-UP WORK

DUE TO ABSENCES

When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by Georgia law or when the absence is apparently beyond the control of the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days absent. Make-up work must be completed within the designated time allotted. See Board Policy IHEA.
